AI Advancement Accelerates, Raises Concerns of Catastrophic Consequences
The development of artificial intelligence (AI) has been rapidly advancing in recent years, with some experts warning that we may not have much time to prepare for potential catastrophic consequences.
As AI systems become more generalizable and capable of performing a wide range of tasks, the speed of progress is accelerating, and the risk of superintelligence arriving sooner rather than later is increasing. Generalization and Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) are key concepts in understanding the speed of AI advances, with some predicting that AGI could be just around the corner.
However, it's essential to differentiate between AGI as a useful concept and AGI as a potentially catastrophic entity. Some AI-driven catastrophes may occur before AGI is achieved, such as rogue human actors using AI systems for malicious purposes. But true superhuman capabilities may be required for AI-driven extinction.
The uncertainty surrounding the development of AGI has led some to argue that we can't know for certain when or if AGI will arrive. However, a pause on AI development is not impossible. The U.S. and China, the dominant players in the AI field, have a shared interest in preventing a superintelligent adversary, and leaders from both countries may soon come to realize this.
