AI Agentic Payments in 2026 Mostly Micropayments Under a Penny
AI agentic payments are generating significant buzz in tech and finance circles, with some comparing their potential impact to the rise of contactless payments. However, a new report from BeInCrypto offers a sobering look at the current state of this emerging technology. Between late July and August 2026, researchers tracked payments on x402, a popular open-source payment protocol used by AI agents, and found that 6.4 million recorded payments were worth less than $120,000. Over 90% of these transactions were for less than a penny, suggesting that AI agents are primarily making small, frequent purchases rather than large-scale financial moves.
The report reveals that AI agents are using these micropayments to access specific services. The most common purchase was an AI-generated cryptocurrency safety assessment, costing just two cents per request. Other frequent transactions included web searches and flight availability checks. These small payments help AI assistants gather information to complete tasks, such as planning a holiday or checking financial data.
Solana dominated the transaction volume, handling 99.2% of the payments in the sample. Notably, 94.5% of all recorded payments occurred during an eight-day burst on Solana, highlighting the concentration of activity among a small group of active wallets. This concentration raises questions about how representative transaction counts are of broader adoption.
BeInCrypto also assessed the readiness of AI agents to handle more complex financial tasks. Micropayments scored the highest at 60.7 out of 100, while trading and investment agents scored 39.1, and institutional workflows lagged at 12. Will Papper, Director of Product for Agent Payments at Cloudflare, emphasized the risks involved, stating that the amount entrusted to software significantly changes the risk profile. 'If an agent is responsible for $10, you can worry less about its spending than if it is responsible for $1,000,' he noted.
