Crypto traders are increasingly turning to AI agents to manage their portfolios around the clock, but Animoca Brands chairman Yat Siu warns of potential risks. Speaking to Cointelegraph at Token2049 Singapore, Siu highlighted that while AI agents can continuously search for new information and alert users to developments, users risk relying on services they don’t control.
Siu shared an example of his own agent, which became overly focused on crypto trading and investment management, interpreting unrelated questions as crypto-related. He suggested using multiple, specialized agents instead of a single, all-encompassing one. A 2025 survey by CoinGecko found that 14.5% of respondents would let AI agents manage their entire crypto portfolio.
However, Siu cautioned that relying on AI agents doesn’t necessarily give traders an edge. He noted that regulators, including the Bank of England’s Financial Policy Committee, have expressed concerns that AI-driven traders could amplify market shocks by taking similar positions during periods of stress.
Crypto firms are already equipping AI agents with tools to handle money. Coinbase introduced Agentic Wallets in February, allowing agents to spend and trade crypto within user-set limits. Binance launched AI Agent Skills in March, giving agents access to live market data and the ability to place and manage spot orders. Siu emphasized the importance of human input in guiding AI agents, suggesting that users should treat them like third-party advisers and be mindful of the privacy implications.
