AI Agents Fueling Stablecoin Payment Growth, Coinbase CEO Predicts
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong believes that AI agents will increasingly rely on stablecoins for payments as software takes over more tasks. The executive envisions a 'machine economy' where digital agents discover services, purchase resources, and settle transactions without human intervention.
To support this growth, Coinbase has started building payment infrastructure tailored to these emerging users. Its x402 protocol enables AI agents to pay directly for APIs, data, software, and other digital services in small USDC payments.
Additionally, Coinbase's 'Agents' product allows agents to trade and complete financial tasks within user-defined spending limits. The company has also integrated its infrastructure with Amazon Web Services' Bedrock AgentCore Payments, making it easier for agents to discover services and make automatic payments.
Stablecoins could play a significant role in expanding agentic commerce, according to Armstrong's view. He predicts that as the number of AI agents grows, so will their need for transactions, and stablecoins will become their preferred payment method.
