AI Agents Spend $50M in Crypto on Micropayments
Coinbase's x402 payment protocol has processed over 165 million transactions worth $50 million, and nearly none of those payments came from humans. The AI agents using Coinbase's system are buying API access, cloud computing time, datasets, and digital tools for about 30 cents each.
Lincoln Murr, Coinbase's head of AI product, explained that the primary use case is machine-to-machine payments from agents to APIs. This means that when an AI assistant needs a weather forecast or a language translation, it calls an API, and that call costs a fraction of a cent.
The current payment infrastructure isn't designed for this high-frequency, low-value transaction volume, making traditional card processing charges 2-4% per transaction impractical. Stablecoins like USDC (pegged to the US dollar) are being used instead because they settle in seconds, run 24/7, and cost a fraction of what Visa or Mastercard would charge for the same volume.
Other companies such as Cloudflare, OKX, and MoonPay are also investing in this infrastructure. However, one major issue remains: nobody has answered the liability question when it comes to AI agent payments.
