AI-Boosted Cyber Threats: INTERPOL Issues Warning to Businesses
INTERPOL's global chief information security officer, Bjorn R. Watne, warned that artificial intelligence is increasing the speed and scale of cyber threats by enhancing existing criminal tactics such as scams and fraud.
According to INTERPOL, AI enables cyber threats by improving translation and digital identities, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish fraudulent interactions from real ones.
'It's an evolution and not a revolution,' Watne said. 'AI is primarily increasing the speed and scale of existing techniques.'
The company advises companies to prioritize protective actions, starting with identifying their 'crown jewels', assets most critical to keeping operations running, and determining who would be interested in stealing or disrupting them.
Companies should then use threat intelligence to understand the tactics and technologies used by adversaries and tailor their defenses accordingly. Watne emphasized that there is no need for companies to protect against every potential threat at once, as they are not being targeted by it.
