AI Capital Expenditure Stifling Bitcoin's Rally

Arthur Hayes, former CEO of BitMEX, suggests that Bitcoin's inability to sustain rallies is due to the increased competition from AI capital expenditure. In a June 2026 interview with Bonnie Blockchain, he attributed the stagnation in crypto markets to investors chasing AI tech equities and supply chains.

Hayes noted that the capital that would normally flow into crypto during money-printing cycles is instead being directed towards semiconductor manufacturers, cloud infrastructure, and AI startups. This shift has left Bitcoin and the broader crypto complex 'starved of speculative inflows.'

He also warned that if AI equities were to crack, it could lead to a forced-selling dynamic in crypto markets, causing prices to tumble in tandem with a deflating AI bubble.
