AI Development Speed Leaves Humans Losing Control, Warns Hut 8 Co-Founder
Marc van der Chijs, an entrepreneur and co-founder of Hut 8 (HUT), has expressed growing concern about the development pace of artificial intelligence. In a recent interview with CoinDesk, he stated that 'I've become more of a doomer over the past week, to be honest.'
Van der Chijs compares AI's potential today to bitcoin in 2013, but now questions whether humans can retain control over its development. He believes that 'we have lost control, actually,' and until this is regained, he worries about moving too fast.
The entrepreneur points to the competitive race between companies and nation-states driving AI development, citing a warning issued by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. Amodei cautioned that rapid progress risks exceeding human control and causing widespread infrastructure damage.
Van der Chijs fears a major disruption may be needed before governments cooperate, potentially affecting financial systems or critical infrastructure. He also believes AI could expose vulnerabilities in legacy banking software, threatening confidence in institutions reliant on interconnected systems.
