AI-Driven Cryptanalysis Threatens Bitcoin Security

Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have raised fresh concerns about Bitcoin's security. Anthropic, a leading AI firm, has revealed that its top-level model, Claude Mythos Preview, discovered novel attacks on weakened cryptographic algorithms. This includes the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), which is widely used to protect internet traffic and blockchain data.

The company claims that their AI-driven approach allowed researchers to break test algorithms up to 1,000 times faster than traditional methods. Anthropic's findings have sparked concerns about the potential threat of advanced AI models to post-quantum encryption standards before quantum computing becomes a practical concern.

Coin Center Executive Director Peter Van Valkenburgh noted that Bitcoin currently uses the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) for transaction verification, which could be vulnerable to powerful quantum computers. However, researchers emphasized that the attacks described targeted experimental and deliberately weakened cryptosystems, not those currently protecting Bitcoin or commercial web traffic.

Experts warn that the accelerated pace of discovery may eventually force teams behind Bitcoin and other major networks to strengthen their protocols, accounting for both quantum and advanced AI-driven cryptanalysis. As developments in both AI and quantum computing accelerate, continuous monitoring of security protocols will remain central to the evolution of the crypto market.
