AI-Enhanced Crypto Scams Targeting Users Directly, Warns Solana's CISO

Solana's Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) Michael Coates has sounded the alarm on AI-powered crypto scams, warning that they are becoming increasingly convincing and targeting users directly. Unlike traditional blockchain flaws or smart contract exploits, these scams rely on social engineering tactics to deceive even careful users.

Crypto transactions are instantaneous and irreversible, making it difficult for victims to recover lost funds. Coates notes that relying solely on user vigilance is not enough, as attackers can now use AI to create realistic messages, fake identities, and voice deepfakes to bypass security checks.

The Solana Foundation's warning extends beyond their own ecosystem, applying to the broader crypto industry where mainstream adoption has increased the attractiveness of users to scammers. To mitigate these risks, Coates advocates for secure defaults and controls, such as wallets that clearly indicate risky approvals and protocols that limit permissions.
