AI Fails Crypto: Phemex CEO Warns of Net Negative Impact

Share

Phemex CEO Federico Variola has sounded the alarm on AI's impact on the cryptocurrency sector, warning that its adoption has been a 'net negative' for crypto. According to him, AI has pulled liquidity away from the sector and increased the scale and sophistication of cyberattacks.

Variola made these comments during an interview with Cointelegraph's Chain Reaction podcast, where he discussed Phemex's plans to embed AI across product development and internal operations. However, his remarks focused on AI's broader consequences for crypto security and decentralization.

He argued that smaller protocol teams may struggle to keep up as AI makes vulnerabilities and exploitation faster to discover and weaponize. This could lead to a 'liquidity drain' and a 'centralization risk', where larger players have an advantage over smaller ones.

Variola also warned that the growing threat landscape could make DeFi feel riskier for retail users, particularly as attacks increasingly blend technical breaches with human-targeted methods such as social engineering.
