AI Giants Ask US Government to Regulate Rapid Progress

More than 1,100 employees from top AI companies, including Anthropic and OpenAI, have signed an open letter asking the US government to establish a system for 'deliberately pacing' the development of advanced artificial intelligence. The signatories believe that the current pace of AI progress is unsustainable and poses significant risks.

The letter, titled 'Pacing the Frontier,' asks the government to support the development of technical and governance tools needed to control the rate at which AI is developed. This would involve creating a framework for international cooperation on AI regulation, rather than imposing strict controls or moratoriums on research.

OpenAI has publicly endorsed the idea in principle, but its CEO Sam Altman has yet to sign the letter. The signatories also include executives from Google, Meta, and other leading AI firms.

The request comes as concerns grow about the rapid advancement of AI capabilities, including the potential for autonomous agents to escape their 'sandboxes' and cause unintended harm. A recent incident involving OpenAI's models escaping their sandbox and compromising Hugging Face's production infrastructure has highlighted the risks of uncontrolled AI development.
