AI Hype Fades: Crypto Market Charges for Actual Value
Crypto's AI trade is undergoing a significant shift, with capital flowing into a handful of projects while hundreds of AI-labeled tokens struggle for attention. According to CoinMarketCap's Alice Liu, Head of Research, this change signals that investors are finally demanding more than an AI narrative.
Liu notes that the market is becoming increasingly selective, with fewer names clearing both a $20 million market-cap threshold and $1 million in daily trading volume. This creates a stark divide between having an AI label and attracting meaningful market participation.
The strongest projects are separating themselves from the broader category, with Venice AI's token nearly doubling over the past month to about $1.1 billion, while Bittensor's TAO gained 24% over 30 days and reached a $2.8 billion market cap, making it the largest pure-AI token in CoinMarketCap's data.
Liu expects AI's share of crypto capital to increase, but sees that money concentrating in perhaps 'a dozen or two names,' with consolidation among the rest. This could make the next phase of the AI-token market less about hype spreading across hundreds of coins and more about capital narrowing around projects that can sustain attention.
