AI Leaders Unite: Altman, Musk, Amodei Call for Industry-Wide Development Slowdown

A growing consensus is emerging among top AI industry leaders to slow down the development of cutting-edge artificial intelligence. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has confirmed that the company will not pursue an initial public offering (IPO) in 2026 as previously anticipated. Instead, Altman suggests that this timeline could be pushed back until at least 2027.

This decision comes on the heels of a comprehensive essay by Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, titled 'We Must Pace the Frontier.' In it, Amodei advocates for intentional deceleration of AI advancement, citing concerns that current progress is outpacing researchers' ability to comprehend or manage these technologies.

Amodei's proposal outlines a three-phase approach: independent oversight, industry-wide cooperation, and global diplomatic frameworks. He argues that even a modest extension of one to two years would provide critical time for researchers to strengthen safety mechanisms before models cross into more perilous capability thresholds.

The call to slow down AI development has been endorsed by Altman, Elon Musk, and Amodei themselves, marking a rare moment of consensus between competing industry leaders. This decision is not without controversy, however, as several incidents have unsettled the artificial intelligence research community. A former researcher from both Anthropic and OpenAI departed this month with stark warnings that AI poses existential risks within this decade.
