AI Market Plunges Amid Existential Risks Fears and Geopolitical Tensions
The AI boom has drawn parallels to the crypto market in terms of hype and investment frenzy. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently called for slowing down frontier AI development, citing concerns about existential risks and humanity's destruction.
Amodei's argument was echoed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who said progress should be slower. Elon Musk also backed Amodei's call to slow down AI development.
The market reacted swiftly to this narrative change, with AI and semiconductor stocks plummeting on September 14. Nvidia fell around 3.4%, Broadcom more than 4%, AMD more than 4%, Micron more than 5%, while Intel fell around 5.6%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped roughly 5-6%.
However, a counter-narrative emerged when Donald Trump dismissed fears about AI destroying humanity as a 'HOAX' and described what he called a 'SICK conspiracy' against AI and data centers. Trump linked AI development to America's competition with China, saying 'WHOEVER WINS AI, WINS!'
The debate raises questions about the geopolitical implications of AI development and whether it can be slowed down unilaterally. If one country decides to slow down AI development, will their competitor continue building it? And if so, what does this mean for global security?
