The current generation of AI models has become dramatically more capable without necessarily becoming better writers. In 2026, frontier models can solve complex mathematics problems, debug software, operate computers, and reason across vast collections of documents. However, when asked to produce a memorable magazine article, the improvement is harder to see.

The writing is competent, often very good, but still falls into familiar habits such as over-explaining, generic transitions, unnecessary summaries, and a polished but unmistakably synthetic register.
