AI-Powered Bitcoin Miners Face $50 Billion Funding Challenge
Bitcoin miners seeking to capitalize on the AI data-center boom face a significant funding challenge. According to VanEck's latest report, publicly traded miners pursuing AI and high-performance computing opportunities have an estimated $50 billion near-term funding gap, with long-term capital requirements reaching roughly $221 billion.
VanEck argues that investors should increasingly value miners based on gross energized power rather than Bitcoin production, reflecting the sector's rapid shift toward AI infrastructure. Companies with signed AI leases, such as Cipher Mining, Hut 8, and TeraWulf, trade at more than 10 times gross energized power, compared to miners like Marathon Digital and CleanSpark, which trade at roughly 2 to 6 times that amount.
VanEck notes that execution, not deal announcements, will be the next phase of valuations, and companies missing delivery targets are punished with sharp re-ratings. The report highlights potential valuation upside for HIVE, Bit Digital, Wytec International, and IREN, while Marathon Digital, CleanSpark, TeraWulf, and Core Scientific appear closer to fair value.
