AI Revolution Dominates Australia's 40-Year Economic Outlook
Australia's new 40-year economic outlook has identified artificial intelligence as one of five major transitions expected to significantly impact the economy. The Intergenerational Report, published on Monday by the Australian Treasury, notes that agentic AI systems have become 'significantly' more capable and widely used.
The report highlights four other significant changes: geopolitical conflicts, an aging population, a shift towards clean energy, and Australia's industrial transformation towards services. However, it omits any mention of cryptocurrency or digital assets.
Coinbase Australia country director John O'Loghlen commented that the report focuses heavily on AI but fails to address the financial infrastructure needed for these systems. He notes that previous reports have also neglected digital assets despite their potential economic benefits.
The Reserve Bank of Australia has been increasing its focus on tokenized finance and financial infrastructure upgrades, with the Digital Finance Cooperative Research Centre estimating digital finance innovations could generate 24 billion Australian dollars ($17.1 billion) in annual economic gains.
