AI's Dark Side: Phemex CEO Says Crypto Industry is Suffering

Phemex CEO Federico Variola expressed skepticism about AI's impact on cryptocurrency, calling it 'net negative' despite his exchange announcing an AI-focused transformation earlier this year.

In a recent interview with Cointelegraph, Variola stated that AI has diverted capital from the crypto industry and empowered attackers, driving up cybersecurity costs for smaller teams. He also warned that these pressures risk pushing crypto toward greater centralization.

Variola's assessment comes after a series of high-profile exploits linked to AI, including one in July where attackers drained roughly $116 million in Bitcoin from over 5,200 addresses affected by a Coldcard hardware wallet flaw. Coinkite CEO Rodolfo Novak warned developers at the time that AI-assisted code review can uncover bugs that outpace even the industry's most seasoned experts.

Despite his concerns, Variola sees practical benefits with AI agents in helping investors build portfolios and make better trading decisions. However, he doesn't expect AI to fully replace human trading decisions.
