AI's Dark Side: Phemex CEO Warns of Net Negative Impact on Crypto
Fedemex CEO Federico Variola has expressed skepticism about AI's impact on the cryptocurrency industry, stating that it has been a 'net negative' for crypto. He believes AI has diverted capital away from the industry and empowered attackers, leading to increased cybersecurity costs for smaller teams.
Variola made these comments in an interview with Cointelegraph, despite his exchange announcing an AI-focused transformation earlier this year. He highlighted that AI has 'empowered a lot of bad actors' who exploit protocols through social engineering or finding vulnerabilities.
According to Variola, the rise of AI will make self-custody and decentralized finance less appealing for retail users due to increased security concerns. However, he acknowledged the potential defensive use of AI in securing cryptocurrency networks.
Variola also discussed the limitations of AI agents in replacing human trading decisions, stating that they can aid investors in building portfolios or making better trading choices but ultimately cannot replace human judgment.
