Algorand Leads Quantum Resistance Efforts with Live Mainnet Transactions

Quantum computing poses a significant threat to cryptocurrencies, and blockchain networks are racing to prepare. Algorand has taken the lead by implementing Falcon signatures, a NIST-selected post-quantum scheme, on its mainnet since November 2025.

The network has processed over 140,000 quantum-resistant transactions, with native protocol-level Falcon accounts scheduled for Q3 2026 and coverage designed to extend beyond wallets into consensus, staking, and multisig. By the end of 2027, Algorand aims to achieve broad protocol resilience.

In contrast, Sei Network's response is a draft proposal called SIP-5, which would allow users to bind an ML-DSA-44 key to their existing EVM address without requiring fund movement or address change. However, this proposal remains on paper and not implemented on mainnet, with signature sizes clocking in at 2,420 bytes.

Sei's own documentation warns that full post-quantum signatures could balloon bandwidth demands dramatically at high throughput, potentially from 13 MB/s to as much as 1.57 GB/s at 200k TPS. Algorand's early deployment and clear milestones give it a tangible talking point in the market.
