Algorand Plummets on Foundation Selling Pressure and Aggressive Shorting
Algorand (ALGO) has dropped by around 5% over the last 20 hours due to selling pressure from its foundation wallets. The Algorand Foundation has transferred large amounts of ALGO to exchanges, which market participants interpret as sell signals.
Traders have been actively shorting ALGO, with some even taking on high leverage positions. One trader noted that a 'price setup was about to do a 3x in August' but was derailed when the Algorand Foundation sent 50 million ALGO to an exchange. Another account quantified the change in liquid supply, stating that it increased by another 5.2 million ALGO in the last few days.
Market participants perceive these large transfers as 'the team is selling', which tends to trigger short-term holders front-running perceived dumps and longer-term holders reducing exposure due to dilution concerns. This narrative has attracted high-leverage short sellers and momentum traders, who have pushed price through nearby supports, turning a supply overhang into a sharper price drop.
The overall crypto market is down around 1.85% over the past 24 hours, with altcoins excluding Bitcoin down 0.77%. However, Algorand's underperformance is significantly more than what market beta alone would suggest, indicating that local factors are driving its move.
