Algorand Sees 30x Surge in x402 Payments Amid Developer Challenge

The Algorand network has seen a significant surge in x402 payments, reaching 40,600 daily settlements, a roughly 30x increase from just five days prior. This growth is attributed to the Global x402 Challenge, a developer competition with a $100K USD and 500K ALGO prize pool.

The x402 protocol, developed by Coinbase, enables pay-per-request transactions between clients and servers, allowing AI agents to interact with APIs without signing up for monthly subscriptions or navigating authentication mazes. Algorand's architecture makes it a natural fit for this use case due to its low transaction fees, instant finality, and native support for stablecoins like USDC.

The challenge has seen participants deploy paid endpoints on Algorand's Mainnet, generating real USDC settlements in the process. The competition is designed to run until at least November 2026, with finalists scheduled to present at Devcon 8 in Mumbai.
