Alpenglow Consensus Upgrade Enters Testing Phase on Solana Network
The Solana network is testing its Alpenglow consensus upgrade, which aims to improve finality speed. The current mainnet still relies on its existing consensus mechanism, but validators are running tests on Alpenglow in Anza's testing networks.
The proposed switch changes how validators agree that a block is final, with a target of 150 milliseconds under favorable network conditions. However, this figure does not guarantee every user payment will clear in the same time frame, as other delays can occur in the process.
Validators have to test the failure cases, including poor network routes, temporary partitions, and missing votes. The Alpenglow migration proposal addresses the handoff from the old voting state to the new one, but a correct steady-state protocol can still be exposed by a poor transition.
The client mix matters in testing, as some clients may not be compatible with Alpenglow. Validator incentives are also part of the test, and running a new voting protocol can alter bandwidth, hardware demands, and participation costs.
