Alpenglow Upgrade Validates Solana's Speed-First Bet
Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko sees the Alpenglow consensus upgrade as validation of the network's speed-first architecture. The upgrade, now live on a test cluster, aims to reduce transaction finality from roughly 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds.
The upgrade replaces Proof of History and TowerBFT with Votor and Rotor, two new components designed to improve efficiency. Yakovenko has framed Alpenglow as proof that Solana can manage MEV at the consensus layer rather than through external middleware.
Alpenglow penalizes validators that miss timeout thresholds, reducing their probability of winning future slots. This approach contrasts with Ethereum's external relay and builder stack, which manages MEV outside the base layer.
