Alpenglow Upgrade Validates Solana's Speed-First Bet, Says Yakovenko
Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko says the Alpenglow consensus upgrade is a key validation of the network's speed-first architecture. The upgrade, now live on a test cluster, aims to cut transaction finality from around 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds.
The milestone marks the largest consensus overhaul in Solana's history and is seen as a pivotal step in the protocol's evolution. Yakovenko has framed Alpenglow as proof that Solana can manage MEV at the consensus layer, rather than through external middleware.
The upgrade replaces Proof of History and TowerBFT with two new components called Votor and Rotor. It also redirects validator incentives toward transparent order-flow auctions, reducing the probability of delayed block production to sell better ordering to searchers.
