Altcoin Breadth Hits Extreme Reading as Bitcoin Pulls Back
Altcoin breadth has reached an extreme reading according to CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost. At 87%, nearly all altcoins on Binance have crossed above their 200-day moving average (DMA), which is a widely used long-term trend line.
This is not necessarily a positive sign, as history suggests that this level of breadth compression precedes corrections or cycle tops, rather than rally midpoints. In fact, three prior instances where breadth reached comparably extreme readings show significant price drops in the altcoin market.
The current setup also features a divergence between Bitcoin's declining price and elevated altcoin breadth, with BTC trading at $82,988 - down 2.24% in 24 hours - while altcoins remain above their 200-DMA. This could resolve bearishly if Bitcoin fails to reclaim its $90,000 level.
