Altcoin Exchange Deposits Surge to Multi-Month Highs Amid Market Volatility
CryptoQuant's data reveals a surge in altcoin exchange deposits over the past two weeks, reaching multi-month highs. The weekly average deposit transaction counts on Binance climbed above 22,700, while Coinbase saw over 8,300 transactions. This trend is not without precedent, as similar spikes have historically preceded significant market volatility.
The broader altcoin market has been performing well, with the Total2 metric, which tracks the combined market capitalization of all altcoins including Ethereum, absorbing over $371 billion in inflows since June 2026. This represents a 45% increase over roughly four months. Furthermore, 87% of Binance-listed altcoins are now trading above their 200-day moving averages, up from just 13% in August 2026.
However, CryptoQuant's head of research, Julio Moreno, flags that similar deposit spikes have historically preceded significant market volatility. In fact, comparable patterns showed up before notable price declines in Bitcoin earlier this year. A bearish RSI divergence on the Total2 metric also suggests the energy pushing prices higher is fading.
The concentration of activity on Binance and Coinbase's 8,300 deposits suggest that this isn't a regional phenomenon but a broad-based shift in behavior. The gap between current deposit volumes and the July 2026 peak of nearly 45,000 daily transactions is also worth watching, if the current surge continues accelerating toward those levels, the selling pressure narrative becomes considerably harder to dismiss.
