Altcoin Market Cap Breaks Two-Year Trend, but Regulatory Risks Loom
The altcoin market has been stagnant for two years, but it seems things may be changing. The combined market cap of all coins outside the top 10 broke above a trendline it's been stuck under since late 2024. This move is significant, with the market cap increasing by over 10% this week to $220 billion.
This breakout occurs on a support zone that has held for about 1,000 days straight. Bitcoin is also holding up well, despite the failed Clarity Act vote and the Fed's rate hike. However, it's worth noting that if Bitcoin breaks down, capital may rotate out of it and into altcoins.
But there are some concerns. CoinShares recently reported that Bitcoin won't push decisively above $80K before year-end unless inflation calms down or the Fed lowers its tone. Additionally, altcoins like Ethereum are more exposed to regulatory risks than Bitcoin.
