Altcoin Market Cap Surges $215 Billion Amid Trump Meeting
A recent surge in altcoin market cap has left many wondering if an 'altseason' is finally underway. Between August 19 and 22, the altcoin market cap increased by $215 billion, a gain of over 24% in just three days. This pushed the total cryptocurrency market cap above $1 trillion.
The sudden rally was sparked by President Donald Trump's meeting with crypto executives at the White House on August 19. During the meeting, Trump urged Congress to pass a 'fair version' of the CLARITY Act and mentioned that a 'sizable' government purchase of Bitcoin had been discussed. In response, Bitcoin broke above $70,000 for the first time since June.
Mid- and small-cap altcoins led the advance, reversing a dormancy phase that began in November. According to analyst Darkfost, more than half of the altcoins on Binance are now trading above their 200-day moving average (DMA), signaling a regime shift.
However, key indicators suggest that an 'altseason' remains unconfirmed. Bitcoin dominance stands at 59.69%, still above the level many traders watch for a broader rotation. Additionally, the Altcoin Season Index currently sits at 49, indicating that fewer than half of the top-performing altcoins have outperformed Bitcoin.
The market has cooled since its initial surge, with the global cryptocurrency market cap down 5.51% over the past 24 hours to $2.57 trillion. The next major catalyst for the market will be the Senate's procedural vote on the CLARITY Act on September 15.
