Altcoin Rotation Fueled by Revenue-Driven Protocols and Selective Participation
Altcoin gains have accelerated over the last 30 days, but whether this marks the beginning of an official 'altseason' remains uncertain. According to CoinMarketCap data, a mix of tokens across memecoins, DeFi, privacy, AI, and infrastructure has posted significant gains, with PONS up more than 350%, Uniswap's UNI over 110%, Arbitrum's ARB up 150%, and NEAR around 180%. Zcash also hit a record above $1,600 last week.
Market observers point to a shift towards 'revenue' and utility narratives, even as memecoins continue to grow. Talos data suggests that capital is concentrating in fewer assets rather than rotating evenly across the long tail. Dealer participation in altcoin trading has fallen since late 2024, implying market makers may be playing a smaller role.
David Hoffman, host of the Bankless podcast, noted that prominent gainers such as ARB and UNI 'make money' and 'print revenue,' suggesting a utility-driven impulse. However, others emphasize that fundamentals are not the only force at work, with memecoins remaining a major growth driver.
The market's behavior is more about selective participation than a wholesale change in strategy, according to Sergej Kunz, co-founder of 1inch. Michael Egorov, founder of Curve Finance and Yield Basis, sees growing interest in protocols with tangible use cases and institutional demand.
