Altcoin Season Unfolds as Bitcoin Trails Behind in Q3
According to Grayscale's analysis, the third quarter of 2025 saw an altcoin season emerge as Bitcoin underperformed in various cryptocurrency markets. This phenomenon was driven partly by Bitcoin's lackluster performance and the momentum from centralized exchanges. Despite positive returns across crypto markets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, AI tokens, and smart contracts, Bitcoin trailed behind other market segments during Q3.
Grayscale identifies several key factors contributing to altcoin strength in this period. These include surging crypto treasuries holding various tokens, greater stablecoin adoption in the U.S., and rising centralized exchange volumes. The report also notes that AI tokens, currencies, and Bitcoin posted more modest gains compared to other cryptocurrency categories.
Bitcoin reached an all-time high exceeding $120,000 in August but still lagged behind other assets. Research indicates both Bitcoin and altcoins fell behind gold and stocks in achieving new price records, partly due to stablecoins leaving exchanges. Grayscale speculates that additional U.S. policies could drive crypto markets in Q4 2025.
