Altcoin Trading Volume Surges to Nearly Four Times Bitcoin's
Altcoin trading volume has surged to nearly four times that of Bitcoin's, its highest level in roughly a year. According to Glassnode's Week On-Chain report for week 39 of 2026, altcoins have seen significant growth in spot trading activity compared to the largest digital asset.
The ratio measures spot market activity across centralized and decentralized exchanges, not price performance or market capitalization. A ratio near 4x indicates that altcoins collectively generated close to four dollars of reported spot turnover for every dollar traded in Bitcoin over the preceding seven-day window.
However, experts caution against interpreting this as a confirmation of an 'altseason,' pointing out that it may also reflect Bitcoin consolidation or traders hunting for returns elsewhere. The current reading is not a directional forecast but rather a signal worth monitoring, as seen in September 2025 when altcoin interest was high before market conditions shifted back toward Bitcoin dominance.
Furthermore, the firm's analysis notes that U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF inflows have contracted across five consecutive sessions, which may be contributing to the relative volume shift by suppressing Bitcoin spot turnover.
