Altcoins Dominate Futures Open Interest as Spot Volume Hits Four Times BTC
Altcoins have been gaining traction in recent times, with their spot trading volume reaching four times that of Bitcoin's. According to Glassnode, this is the highest ratio recorded this year, surpassing previous highs.
The surge in altcoin volume has also been reflected in futures positioning, with Coinalyze data showing that altcoins account for 41% of total open interest, a level last seen before a Bitcoin pullback in December 2024. This shift is significant, as it indicates that investors are increasingly turning to alternative assets.
However, rising exchange inflows suggest that selling pressure may be increasing on altcoins. DarkFrost noted that 'actually, what I saw is that altcoin inflows are surging, which means that selling pressure is increasing on altcoins.'
The stablecoin data provides a less bearish counterpoint, as exchange reserves slipped despite Bitcoin's recent decline. This could indicate continued accumulation of Bitcoin during the pullback.
