Altcoins Outshine Bitcoin as PUMP Token and Zcash Soar
In August, several major altcoins accelerated sharply after Bitcoin broke out of a long sideways movement. Assets like PUMP Token, Zcash, Hyperliquid, and Lighter benefited from their own drivers and strong news flow, which sometimes allowed them to outpace the main coin.
According to Coingecko's top 100 by capitalization ranking, the selection included highly liquid crypto assets. The comparison was made based on dynamics over the last 30 days as of September 1, looking at factors that could support demand such as network upgrades, exchange-traded products launch, token buybacks, entry into new markets, and investor interest.
PUMP Token, which is part of a platform for launching memecoins on the Solana network, has been successful due to its buyback mechanism. Since its launch in early 2024, it has earned more than $1.43 billion, with over $382 million bought back. The token's price rose despite a major unlock event where team and early investors received tokens worth around $30 million.
Another notable performer was Zcash, the main representative of the privacy coin sector. With a capitalization exceeding $14 billion, it held around $840 as of September 1. Its growth began without clear mass interest in the project but over 12 months rose by more than 2000%. The Ironwood upgrade strengthened its security and integrity, while the launch of a spot exchange-traded fund based on ZEC in the United States further boosted demand.
Hyperliquid and Lighter, decentralized perpetual futures exchanges, saw their native tokens HYPE and LIT grow due to discussions about entering the US market. The trading volume for both platforms was substantial, with Hyperliquid leading at $210 billion over 30 days. Both projects use a buyback and burn strategy.
