Altcoins Soar $215 Billion in Three Days Amid Trump's Crypto Pledge
The altcoin market has experienced a significant surge in recent days, adding over $215 billion to its total market capitalization between August 19 and August 22. This rapid expansion pushed Total2, which tracks the crypto market cap excluding Bitcoin, back above $1 trillion.
According to Darkfost, a crypto analyst, more than half of altcoins on Binance now trade above their 200-day moving average trendline, signaling a possible shift in market structure. This trend has reversed from November's extended dormancy across the broader altcoin market.
The rally followed a series of announcements made by President Trump on August 19, which included his statement that the United States would purchase large amounts of Bitcoin and urged Congress to pass the Clarity Act. These statements triggered a wave of new liquidity into altcoin markets, pushing prices higher across multiple sectors within days.
Historical patterns suggest that reclaiming the 200-day moving average can precede stronger altcoin performance. In 2021, a similar reclaim was followed by an average sixfold rally into that cycle's highs. However, markets have also entered overbought territory, suggesting a short-term pause may follow.
