Altcoins vs Bitcoin: When to Swap Your Holdings

Instruments
BTC
Share

A swap from an altcoin to Bitcoin may make sense when the original reason for holding the altcoin is no longer convincing, and Bitcoin offers exposure that better matches your broader view of crypto.

The decision should not be based on recent price movements or trying to guess which coin will rise next. Instead, compare the project, risk, costs, taxes, and role each asset plays in a portfolio.

An altcoin becomes less convincing when development has slowed, users have moved elsewhere, promised features have repeatedly been delayed, or competitors now provide a stronger alternative. Security problems and major changes to the way tokens are issued can also change how a project looks.

Moving an altcoin position into Bitcoin may change the type and level of risk, but the portfolio still remains exposed to crypto market risk. Smaller crypto projects can carry risks connected to their development teams, liquidity, token supply, security, and relatively limited adoption.
