Americans Sour on AI as Familiarity Grows
Americans' attitudes towards artificial intelligence (AI) have shifted in the past two years, according to a report from polling company Gallup.
While seven in ten Americans now claim they are somewhat or extremely knowledgeable about AI, this growing familiarity has not led to increased comfort. In fact, more people believe that AI does more harm than good and will reduce U.S. jobs over the next decade.
The report found that 39% of Americans now think AI does more harm than good, a significant increase from 31% in 2025. This skepticism is particularly pronounced among younger adults, with nearly half of those aged 18-29 believing AI does more harm than good, up from 36% last year.
Gallup also found that trust in businesses to use AI responsibly has declined, especially among younger adults. Only 27% of Americans now trust businesses at least 'some' to use AI responsibly, down from 31% in 2025. Among those aged 18-29, this figure dropped from 30% to 20%, while the percentage with no trust at all increased from 29% to 41%.
