The change, announced on Thursday, reflects the firm's shift to support startups in artificial intelligence, robotics, and other emerging technologies, while still backing crypto projects. The fund, initially launched in 2018 with a focus on blockchain and crypto, now operates under a $2.2 billion scope announced in May.
Managing partner Chris Dixon will lead the fund alongside other general partners. Dixon noted in an X article that the lines between crypto companies and other businesses are blurring, making labels like 'crypto' less relevant. The firm's expansion aligns with similar moves by other investors, such as Paradigm and Haun Ventures, which have also broadened their investment horizons.
a16z Crypto's general partner Ali Yahya is reportedly planning to depart to launch a startup, according to The Information. The firm's latest fund is part of a total $9.8 billion raised across five funds, with notable investments including Uniswap and Anchorage Digital. The rebranding marks a departure from the firm's earlier stance that its fifth fund was '100% dedicated to investing in crypto entrepreneurs.'
