Apple Taps Google's Gemini for Siri as Alphabet Unleashes $185B AI Infrastructure Spree
Apple has partnered with Google's Gemini to power its next-generation Siri virtual assistant. This move allows Apple to maintain its image as a privacy-first company while Siri becomes smarter and iPhones more capable, without having to build and maintain massive AI data centers.
The partnership sent Alphabet's market capitalization to $4 trillion in January 2026, briefly making it the world's second-most valuable company. However, investors were not thrilled when Alphabet announced projected capital expenditures of between $175 billion and $185 billion for 2026, nearly double its spending in 2025.
Alphabet's shares dropped 5% after the spending announcement, a significant loss of value given the company's massive market cap. This has raised concerns about the concentration of AI power in the hands of just two companies, worth a combined $7-plus trillion, and the potential for a single point of failure.
The decentralized AI narrative in crypto is gaining traction as projects build alternatives to centralized dependency, such as decentralized GPU marketplaces and federated learning networks. Microsoft and OpenAI's tightly integrated AI stack now faces a unified Apple-Google front, with Siri reaching more pockets than any AI assistant on the planet.
