Apple's Delayed Response Allows Fake DeFi Apps to Drain Wallets

Share

DeFiLlama's mobile app launch was delayed due to fake apps impersonating the company on Apple's App Store. The founder, 0xngmi, reported that they spent months trying to get Apple to remove the fake apps by reporting trademark violations and impersonation. However, it wasn't until they downloaded a fake DefiLlama app and let a small wallet be drained that Apple removed the app in days.

According to 0xngmi's account, the team intentionally delayed their mobile app launch until all the fake apps were taken down to avoid any users getting scammed. The founder described this tactic as abnormal, saying 'It's abnormal that we have to go this far to protect users.'

The episode is part of a broader pattern of crypto brand impersonation, with a recent case involving a fake Ledger Live app on the Microsoft Store resulting in the theft of $588,000 across 38 transactions.
