Applied Digital Expands Capacity but Stock Falls 4 Percent Alongside Peers
Applied Digital Corporation (NASDAQ:APLD) has expanded its capacity at the Polaris Forge 1 campus in North Dakota, yet its stock is down 4% alongside peers IREN Limited (NASDAQ:IREN) and Cipher Digital (NASDAQ:CIFR). The company announced that it has brought an additional 75 megawatts of critical information technology load online, marking the second phase of Building 2 at its flagship campus as Ready for Service. Despite this operational progress, the stock is under pressure, trading at $24.31 in midday trading.
The decline is part of a broader pullback among AI data center operators, with IREN and Cipher Digital also sliding 4%. These companies, which have roots in crypto mining infrastructure, are now focused on leasing high-performance computing capacity to AI customers. While the broader market and the Global X Data Center & Digital Infrastructure ETF (NASDAQ:DTCR) show slight gains, these three stocks are bucking the trend.
Applied Digital CEO Wes Cummins emphasized that securing power is just the beginning, highlighting the importance of designing, building, and operating infrastructure that converts megawatts into usable capacity. The Polaris Forge 1 campus is fully leased, ensuring that the new capacity is immediately available to tenants. However, the company's shares remain volatile, tied to a peer group that faces high growth expectations and significant build-out spending.
Looking ahead, the key for Applied Digital will be maintaining contracted demand in line with its expanding capacity. New lease announcements could signal strong customer interest, but for now, the stock's performance is closely linked to the broader sentiment toward AI infrastructure operators.
