Arbitrum One's Unique Features: A Guide for Users

Arbitrum One is the largest extension of Ethereum in terms of capital deposited on it. When users first transfer funds to Arbitrum, they often encounter three questions that aren't answered by the price: how to get there, where their holdings are located, and why returning to Ethereum takes seven days. The latter is a result of the security promise paid for with low fees.

The cost of transferring assets on Arbitrum One was measured at around 0.001 euros on September 28, 2026, at approximately 6:55 UTC, compared to roughly 0.007 euros on Ethereum in the same minute. This gap is narrower than usual due to Ethereum's current quiet period.

Arbitrum One operates as an EVM chain, allowing existing Ethereum addresses to be used without requiring a separate wallet. Most common wallets already include Arbitrum One in their network list, and users can easily select it with a single click. The chain ID is crucial for setting up the network, which is 42161.

The fee on Arbitrum has two components: execution on Arbitrum itself and reimbursing the cost of writing transaction data to Ethereum in batches. Arbitrum compresses each transaction individually before converting its size into Ethereum gas units. This process can be made visible by checking the gas price, which stood at 0.02002 gwei on September 28, 2026.

On September 28, 2026, a simple transfer was estimated to cost around 21,647 gas on Arbitrum One, compared to exactly 21,000 gas on Ethereum. The difference of 647 units is the data share that lands on the main chain, accounting for roughly three percent of the total fee.

The most convenient route to Arbitrum runs through an exchange, where large trading venues pay out ETH and USDC directly into the network. The canonical bridge from Ethereum to Arbitrum takes around ten to fifteen minutes but requires a full Ethereum transaction. Intent bridges are faster but rely on the operator rather than the chain.

Arbitrum One is an optimistic rollup, which means it first assumes optimistically that submitted settlements are correct and publishes them on Ethereum. A window then runs in which any participant can challenge the settlement with a fraud proof. Only once this window passes without objection is the state considered confirmed, allowing for withdrawal execution.

The seven-day period for withdrawals on Arbitrum One is not a bottleneck but a design principle ensuring security. The process involves initiating withdrawal, waiting out the period, and then sending a second transaction on Ethereum to collect the amount. This requires keeping ETH ready on your Ethereum address to avoid missing the collection opportunity.

Arbiscan serves as the block explorer for Arbitrum One, offering features similar to Etherscan. It's essential to check Arbiscan when encountering issues or misunderstandings about transactions, token transfers, and granted approvals. The explorer provides detailed information on each transaction, including fees broken down into execution share and data share.

Common mistakes to avoid include withdrawing from the wrong network, missing ETH, and dealing with fake tokens. These errors can lead to losses but are preventable by being cautious and aware of the system's workings.
