Arbitrum's Optimistic Rollup Tech Gains Momentum with Stylus Environment
Offchain Labs, founded in 2018 by Ed Felten, Steven Goldfeder, and Harry Kalodner, began developing Arbitrum's optimistic rollup technology. This method transfers computational work off-chain and settles compressed data on Ethereum. With its mainnet release on August 31, 2021, Arbitrum One became the only EVM-equivalent rollup with working fraud proofs.
The Stylus Programming Environment provides a WebAssembly virtual machine for Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova. This environment enables Rust, C, and C++ programs to run alongside Solidity, executing over an order of magnitude faster than their counterparts.
Arbirum commands between $16 billion and $20 billion in total value locked in 2026. The network processes billions of transactions and supports massive developer communities. Arbitrum faces competition from Base, zkSync, and StarkNet, which target retail onboarding and interoperability.
