Argentina Reaches $19B Deal with China to Secure Reserve Access Through 2027
Argentina's central bank has renewed its currency swap line with China's People's Bank for another five years, securing $19 billion in reserve access through 2027. The agreement, which has been in place since 2009 and was set to expire on August 6, 2026, is a critical backstop when IMF access is constrained or conditional.
The renewal of the swap line puts President Javier Milei and Economy Minister Luis Caputo in an awkward position, as they face pressure from the U.S. to reduce dependence on Chinese financing while keeping the lights on domestically.
The agreement does not involve any crypto assets, but a more stable reserve position gives the Milei administration more room to pursue digital asset initiatives without immediate pressure of a reserves crisis dominating policy conversations.
