Argentina's Economic Woes Drive Cryptocurrency Adoption
Argentina's long-standing preference for the US dollar has been fueled by recurring economic crises and chronic inflation. This is one of the reasons why cryptocurrencies have spread rapidly in the country.
A study by Lemon Cash, a local fintech company, found that Argentina has four times more users than an average Latin American country. The local population's 12% use digital tools (which make up a quarter of the region's overall activity). For comparison, Venezuela and Peru have 7.5% and 3% adoption rates respectively.
This leading role in Latin America is particularly significant given that the region is one of the world's fastest-growing cryptocurrency markets. In 2025, the total value of cryptocurrencies in the region exceeded $730 billion (representing a 60% annual increase). According to Chainalysis data cited by Lemon Cash, this represents 10% of global transactions.
The use of stablecoins has been particularly widespread among Argentines, who have historically used them for savings and international transactions. After the lifting of exchange controls in April 2025, many people maintained their stablecoin holdings while diversifying their investments. According to OKX's regional director, Karina Caudillo: 'Argentine experience with inflation, peso devaluation, and preservation of purchasing power has given them a unique familiarity with digital assets.'
