Armstrong: Crypto and AI Complementary Technologies, Not Competitors

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has spoken out against what he calls 'zero-sum' thinking in the crypto and AI sectors, arguing that they are not competing industries but rather complementary technologies. In a recent post on X, Armstrong emphasized that crypto is a general-purpose technology, likening its potential impact to that of electricity or the internet.

According to Armstrong, the integration of AI agents will create unprecedented demand for blockchain-based assets, effectively making crypto more critical to the functioning of future financial systems. He noted that AI agents will require real-time programmable money, which is provided by cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.

The CEO's remarks arrive at a time when market performance has starkly contrasted between companies pivoting to AI and the broader crypto market. While some firms have seen significant gains, such as Hut 8 Corp., which has reported a year-to-date increase of nearly 140%, others have declined in value.
