Atlanta Banker Charged in $1M Crypto Heist

Share

A former bank employee in metro Atlanta has been charged with helping to steal nearly $1 million from customer bank accounts and transfer the funds to cryptocurrency accounts controlled by her co-conspirators.

Mercedes Henry, 35, of Stone Mountain, worked as a universal banker for Ameris Bank at multiple locations in 2021.

Prosecutors say Henry used customer account information to link six Ameris Bank accounts to accounts on the Coinbase cryptocurrency exchange platform between September and November 2021.

The scheme resulted in the fraudulent transfer of $931,500 from customer accounts to Coinbase accounts controlled by Henry's co-conspirators.

Henry allegedly received more than $1,000 for her role in the scheme.
