Austrian Bitcoin Investors Must File Tax Returns Despite Automated Withholding

Austrian Bitcoin investors who use foreign exchanges or have complex transactions may still need to file their income tax returns, despite some crypto service providers automatically withholding capital gains tax.

This is because foreign platforms typically do not withhold Austrian capital gains tax, and losses from cryptocurrencies can only be offset against other investment gains through tax assessments.

Incorrect or incomplete acquisition cost data can also require filing to correct tax calculations. However, from 2025, detailed tax reporting by Austrian providers will make these assessments easier.
