Avalanche Cuts Validator Lockups to 48 Hours with Helicon Upgrade
Avalanche's Helicon upgrade is set to bring significant changes to its validator system. Scheduled for September 22 at 15:00 UTC, the upgrade will reduce validator lockups from 14 days to just 48 hours.
This change is expected to make it easier for validators to participate in the network and reduce manual signing work. The Helicon upgrade also introduces auto-renewing commitments, allowing validators to automatically begin a new cycle when their current one ends.
However, this new system comes with its own set of rules. Validators must now achieve at least 90% uptime for rewards, up from 80%, and will face penalties if they fail to meet this threshold. The exact realized yield on short-duration Avalanche rewards is expected to decrease by about 1.3% after the phase-in.
